Session 5: PRN (As Needed) Medications

This fifth session covers the medications clients are most likely to ask about between appointments: PRN, or "as-needed," medications.

It covers the main categories (benzodiazepines, beta-blockers, antipsychotics, melatonin, and newer agents) and what they're used for, including panic, acute anxiety, insomnia, and anxiety around medical procedures.

The session goes into how to use benzodiazepines appropriately: dependence risk, short- vs. long-acting agents, interactions with alcohol and stimulants, and what helps clients come off them.

It also looks at why "as-needed" isn't always as-needed, since frequent use can mean someone needs daily treatment or a closer look at the underlying condition.

For clients who under-use their PRN out of fear, you'll learn how simply having access to the medication can keep things from escalating. The session closes with coping strategies to try first and how to bring concerns to prescribers without stepping outside your scope.
